»Job Vacancy Information Access Challenges for Job Seekers

The major problem that most Job Seekers often encounter in South Africa is basically a way cost-effective for them to find Job Vacancy information.  The means available to them are usually newspapers, notice boards, and internet cafés.

Current Job Vacancy Information Sources

Disadvantages for Job Seekers

Newspapers
  • Job Seekers in townships and rural areas incur daily travelling costs to get to a shop to buy the daily newspaper.
  • Newspapers have very few jobs. An average 20 jobs are published per day and the quality of these jobs in many cases is very low.
  • Newspapers are usually regional meaning a newspaper available in one area may actually not be available in another area depriving Job Seekers in one area of seeing Job Vacancies in other areas, for instance a KwaZulu-Natal job seeker cannot readily know about job opportunities in Gauteng and Cape Town.
Notice Boards at Government Places
  • Job Seekers incur travelling costs to these government places which are usually situated in towns/cities.
  • Notice Boards just don’t have enough space to show all of the jobs available in governmnet because of limited space.
  • Government notice boards usually only show jobs available only in that municipality and not other municipalities, and thus again Job Seekers cannot easily find out jobs occurring in other municipalities.
Internet Cafes
  • It’s true many Jobs are posted online, but only about 10% of South Africans have got access to internet because of the high costs of acquiring a PC and paying for internet service access, further more there are infrastructural and econonomic challenges still prevailing that prevent for South Africa to have broadband rolled out in all of its corners.
  • Internet Cafes are the main means of access to the internet for many Job Seekers however these are often in towns/cities, thus many rural and township people have to travel great distances to access internet cafes and internet café internet as can cost anything from R5 per hour in cities/towns to R40 per hour in some rural areas.

Challenges in Applying for Jobs

Fax

  • Faxing is costly at around R8 per page or R24 for a three (3) page CV to just one employer, the chance that one will be employed is also dependant on the number of times one applies for a jobs, clearly most job seekers just do not afford to apply as many times as they want.

E-mail

  • Emailing a CV requires one to be by a PC with internet, with only 10% of people having access to PC with internet, clearly most job seekers are disadvantaged in this regard. Job Seekers therefore depend on expensive internet cafes which are in town/cities which means they further incur travelling costs.
